Dr. Christoph Schewe

Dr. Christoph J. Schewe is the DAAD-Visiting Associate Professor of European and International Economic Law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Latvia, where he has been on the faculty since 2011. From 2006 to 2011, he served as the DAAD-Associate Professor at the University of Tartu in Estonia. Dr. Schewe’s principal expertise relates to European law, international economic law (international trade and investment law), and German law.

Dr. Schewe regularly publishes books and articles in international journals in English, German, and Latvian. He speaks frequently about European and international economic law in Latvia and abroad. His most recent lectures and workshops have been in Lithuania, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Kazakhstan, presented in the English, German and French languages.
Prior to his academic career, Dr. Schewe practiced law in Hamburg and developed expertise in international trade law working at the European Commission in Brussels, DG Internal Market, and at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) in Bangkok.
Dr. Schewe holds a PhD in law from the University of Bremen, Germany, a Master in Estudios Europeos y Derechos Humanos from the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, Spain, and has passed the two German State Exams in Law. Since 2005, Dr. Schewe has been admitted as German Rechtsanwalt at the Hanseatic Bar Association in Hamburg.

Having worked and studied in Germany, Belgium, France, Costa Rica, Argentina, Spain, Thailand, Estonia and Latvia, Dr. Schewe has a strong international background. He is fluent in German, English, French and Spanish and has a good command of the Latvian, Portuguese, Estonian and Russian languages.
